If you publish online, you often have to have photographs to go with your articles. This is something that I have had to deal with in the past, and I found that it is not as easy as I thought it would be. As a writer, I can understand copyright laws, and I understand why many photographs are protected.
There are some sites online that allow you use of photographs for free, but if you need photos of people, you are going to have a hard search in front of you. Most of the free photographs I have found do not include people in any way, shape, or form.
The Model Release Photographers who take photos of people often have to have the people in the photographs signed release forms. This means that they grant the photographer the use of their image for whatever purpose the photograph is intended to be used for. In many cases, when you find photos of people online, the site using that photo has had to pay a good sum for it.
When you are not earning very much money for your writing, it is hard to find rights managed stock photos of people to use with articles when needed. When you are being paid ten dollars an article, you don’t have a hundred or so dollars to spend on a photograph.

That is why you see them so frequently in magazines, newspapers, school textbooks and other publications. No matter what the article is about, you may find people in lifestyle pictures being used to advertise that article.
If you see an article about home improvement, chances are good that there is a person in the photo, even if the central image is of a living room. Relationship and medical articles almost always include photos of people. If you go to a site like MSN.com, most of the photos you see there have been purchased for a good sum of money.
Pricing for Model Released Stock Photos of People If you’re looking for photos of people to use for a commercial purpose, you may have to pay a good price for them. You should know that even if you are using photos for a personal use online, you most likely will still have to pay for the photo.
Warning: Know the Usage Rights of Every Picture You Use!!! When you are looking online for photos of people, make sure you read the fine print on each site very carefully. There are often strict guidelines that go along with the use of any photo, and these guidelines and usage rights may be even more strict for photos of people. If you are not sure, don't use the image, period. The photographer always retains the rights and will be able to collect his or her fee.
With that said, using photos of people really can say a "thousand words" to sell your article or magazine. Give the photographer her dues and don't let your work suffer because you lack a good picture.
